First, Metropolis, after being public domain from 1953-96, has been restored to copyright by GATT. This has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

Fortunately, there is an authorized restored version, which is truly awesome.... you didn't really want to watch the icky public domain prints anyway.

The authorized release is beautiful. It's still about 6 minutes short.

As far as I'm aware it was simply not used after the first showings and thus wasn't preserved. The film did really badly when it came out and was thus butchered by the studio to try to make it more commercial. Someone did try to make a version including the photos of sets that still existed and they gave a narration over the top of those bits as to what was happening. However someone will probably make another now that 20 minutes of the original have been discovered in Argentina, it won't be full but will be more complete than others. Apparently the original was very different from the version most of us have seen. Sorry not to be more helpful.
